First International hackathon BR41N.IO in Trbovlje

21.10.2019 10:00

Experimenting with BCI interfaces under the guidance of experts

The 11th edition of the Speculum Artium in 2019 offered a first-class event, the BR41N.IO hackathon, designed as a conceptual and development marathon for researchers, technologists, engineers, students, artists and scientists, with the aim of jointly creating new applications for brain-computer interfaces (BCI).

In a short time and with the cooperation of creatives from different fields and different backgrounds, the first international hackathon BR41N.IO in Slovenia, more precisely in Delavski dom Trbovlje, created new interesting and useful applications for BCI/BMI interfaces.

The participants had the opportunity to apply for various projects in which they then collectively researched and created new applications. Most of the projects were based on the use of “The Unicorn Brain” BCI/BMI interface, and the “Unicorn Suite” application, while additional software was installed by the participants on their laptops before arriving at the hackathon. The BCI for “The Unicorn Brain” device was provided by organizers of the hackathon.

The event was designed for all those who wanted to learn more about BCI/BMI technology, robotics, AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality), machine learning, data processing, sensors, human-machine interfaces, controllers, signal processing, haptics, rehabilitation and similar fields. All groups created under the mentorship of expert developers of BCI technologies – g.tec.

The relaxed atmosphere on the part of both, the developers from g.tec, and the participants of the BR41N.IO hackathon led to results and thinking "outside the box", with Jon Tavčar and Marko Krajinovič (IMAGINATION SOLUTION project; Unity games Team) winning the prestigious international cash prize. First place (cash prize) went to Vesna Krebs and Borut Kumperščak (INTERFERENCE project; Unity games team), second place to Miha Godec, Valerie Wolf Gang and Žiga Pavlovič (TEAM DAVID project; Unity rehab Team), and third place to Jaka Cikač (OTSALA project; Dream painting Member).
